Brigadier General Robert J. Lundy, Jr., USA, Ret. passed away at his daughter’s home on Thursday, December 26, 2024. Born July 30, 1942, in Pottsville, PA, Robert was the son of the late Kathryn (Blewitt) and Robert J. Lundy, Sr.
He was a 1960 graduate of Scranton University. He received a regular Army commission as a distinguished military student and graduate in 1964. Following successful completion of Infantry Officer Basic, Airborne Training, and the US Army ranger course, he served in the Republic of Vietnam and Germany from 1965 – 1969. During that period he commanded an infantry company in the 2nd Battalion, 13th Infantry. He ended his active duty career in 1970 while assigned as Chief, Ammunition Division, Letterkenny Army Depot.
For the next 20 years, he worked as a civilian employee for Department of the Army and as an officer in the PA Army National Guard and US Army Reserve. Some of his civilian assignments included Chief, Technical Services Office, Letterkenny, and Chief, Military Personnel Division, US Army Depot Systems Command. His military assignments included commanding armored calvary and artillery units, assistant chief of staff for intelligence (GZ), 28th infantry division (5 years), deputy G2, 5th corps, US Army Europe (Reforger 1985), Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) in 1989. He was medically retired on disability from civilian and military service in January of 1990.
Some of his military awards and schooling include the Expert Infantryman Badge (EIB), Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster (OLC), Army Commendation Medal with OLC, Army Achievement Medal, Distinguished Service Medal (PA) Paratrooper Wings and Ranger Tab. Military schooling included graduation from the US Army Command and General Staff College (with honors), and the US Army War College, Carlisle Barracks.
His proudest military recognition occurred when, on June 30, 1992, the Adjutant General of Pennsylvania placed him on the retired list of the PA National Guard in the Rank of Brigadier General.
He is survived by his children, Barbara Kegerreis (husband Lance) and Robert J. Lundy III (wife Liz); step-daughter, Elizabeth Stempien all of Chambersburg; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren with two on the way; and his sister, Barbara Lumbie of Harding, PA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marie; son, Richard “Rick” Lundy; and step daughter, Jackie Stempien.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at 11 AM in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, where Rev. Rick McCarl will officiate. The family will receive friends in the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Following the service, interment for both Robert and his wife, Marie will take place in Corpus Christi Cemetery, where military honors will be rendered by members of the VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard.
