Robert Stormer

January 26, 1925 — September 23, 2013

Robert Reed Stormer, Jr., age 88 of Chambersburg, PA, died September 23, 2013. Born in 1925 in Oil City, PA, he was the son of the late Robert R. Stormer, Sr. and Leona M. Thompson Stormer.
Mr. Stormer earned degrees in history and political science from Allegheny College and the University of Chicago. He also studied at the City College of New York and American University in Washington, D.C. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Mr. Stormer was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Chambersburg. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served with the 75th Infantry Division in Europe and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was employed by the U.S. Department of State for 31 years, retiring in 1982. He administered the allowances and benefits program for civilian federal employees in foreign areas. Upon retirement he was given the Department’s Superior Honor Award. He and his wife, Anna Knelle Sharp, were married in 1950 in Kansas City, MO. After living in the Washington, D.C. area for forty years, they moved to Chambersburg in 1990.
Surviving is his wife and three daughters, Susan C. Senft (and husband Bruce) of Harrisburg, PA, Cynthia C. Stormer (and husband Steven Earley) of Pacific Grove, CA, and Beverly G. Tripp (and husband Scott) of Silver Spring, MD; six grandchildren; a niece and nephew; two great-nephews and two great-nieces. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at 11 AM at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 1811 Lincoln Way East, Chambersburg, PA 17202, where Rev. Mark Ruzicka will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the above church and address or to Lutheran Social Services, 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., York, PA 17404.
