Robert Tillman

August 9, 1938 — July 3, 2012

Robert Tillman, son of the late George and Honga Phillips Tillman, was born on August 9, 1938 in Lenoir County, NC. He departed this life on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at the Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, PA. He graduated from Savannah High School, Grifton, NC and furthered his education by enrolling at North Carolina Central University, Durham, NC.

He retired from the US Navy, and later retired from the position of Department Manager from Fort Detrick in Frederick, MD. He was also employed at the US Environmental Protection Agency at Research Triangle Park, NC, and was last employed as a Senior Specialist with Pathstone in Chambersburg. At an early age, he joined Sand Hill Free Will Baptist Church, Kinston, NC. He was a member of the Love Temple in Mercersburg where he served as the church’s Associate Pastor, an Elder, and a musician. His passion in life was music and he enjoyed sharing his love of music with the youth of his congregation by teaching them to play musical instruments. Robert was affectionately known as the “B.B. King” of KACWM, Inc.

He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Bishop Patricia Horton Tillman, two biological sons, Donald Tillman (Yolanda) of Apex, NC and Alan Tillman (Brenda), of Durham, NC; three step-children, Shelia Miller of Louisburg, NC, Shelton Miller of Chambersburg, and Sharon Nicole Miller of Louisburg, NC; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson. He is also survived by four sisters: Mildred T. Bryant (Robert, deceased) of Kinston, NC, Lola T. McKnight (George, deceased) of Durham, NC, Janet T. Grady (Lynwood) of Kinston, NC, Alice T. O’Neal (Wilbert), Zebulon, NC, two brothers: Clayton E. Tillman (Cheri) of DeSoto, Texas and Glen B. Tillman (Lisa) of Raleigh, NC; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; and plenty of spiritually adopted children.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Tuesday, July10, 2012 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 750 Norland Avenue, Chambersburg, PA with Bishop Wilbert Baltimore and Bishop Sterling Porter officiating. Entombment with military honors by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will follow at Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Monday at St. Paul United Methodist church.
