Robert M. “Bob” Varner, 79, of Chambersburg, PA passed away at 9:45 AM Saturday, May 7, 2011 at Manor Care Health Services. Born September 12, 1931 in Blairs Mills, PA, he was a son of the late Harold Blaine and Anna Polk Varner. A US Army veteran, Bob served honorably in both the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He worked as an administrator for the US Department of Defense at Letterkenny Army Depot and most recently at the Chambersburg Army Reserve Center. Bob was a member of the American Legion Post #46 and the New Guilford Brethren in Christ Church. He was a Penn State and Atlanta Braves fan and enjoyed taking vacations.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene B. Ulrich Varner, whom he married November 23, 1958; two children, Timothy A Varner, and fiancé Dotti Guyer of Newburg, and Bradley L. Varner of Ft. Lauderdale FL. Aside from his parents, Bob is preceded in death by one brother, and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 11, 2011 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Lawton Jacobs and Rev. Bob Verno will officiate. Interment will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens where military honors will be provided by members of the Charles M. Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the New Guilford Brethren in Christ Church, 1575 Mont Alto Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202.
