Lt Col (ret) Rodger L. Barnhart, of Chambersburg passed from this life on Sunday 5 March 2017 at his home in Chambersburg after long battle with cancer. He was born at Fort Monroe, Virginia, February 12th, 1938 to the late Major (retired USAF) C. L. “Barney” and M. Virginia “Ginny” (Auman) Barnhart.
Rodger was a graduate of Chambersburg High School class of 1955. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering from Penn State University in 1959. Rodger retired from U. S. Air Force in 1982, having served for 23 years. He served in Vietnam in 1970-71 with distinction.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years Nancy E. (Faith) Barnhart. They married 30 August 1960 in Chambersburg. Also surviving are his son Chris L. Barnhart and wife Jodi (Schellhase) Barnhart; and grand-daughter Rebecca L. Barnhart, all of Illinois.
He enjoyed a variety of activities including, hunting, fishing, skiing, horseback riding, and traveling. He especially enjoyed spending time in the mountains of Colorado where he worked for many years as a wrangler and packer with a group of friends that ran Colorado High Guide Service.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Chambersburg for many years, and served on Council and the Property Committee.
The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, March 9, 2017 at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Family and friends are invited to attend at graveside service at 10:00 AM Friday, March, 10, 2017 at Norland Cemetery which will then be followed by a memorial service to celebrate Rodger’s life at 11:30 AM at First Evangelical Lutheran Church with The Reverend Jane Nicholson will officiating.
