Roy Nester

February 16, 1925 — April 9, 2016

Roy Thomas Nester, 91, of Chambersburg, PA died peacefully on Saturday, April 9, at the Menno Village Nursing Center. Born February 16, 1925 in Birmingham, Alabama, he was son of the late Reed T. and Mary C. Nester.

A U.S. Navy veteran, in the V-5 flight program, Roy served honorably in World War II. He had a 50+ year career as a radio personality, disc jockey, and station manager that began in Cleveland OH. He worked at WINC Radio in Winchester, VA from 1957 until 1974. He worked the evening shift through the 70s, playing the latest pop and rock 'n' roll tunes on the Platter Party show. While in Winchester he also led the Handley Library summer story hour for young children. He was station manager of WAYZ Radio in Waynesboro PA from 1974 until 1979. He was associated with the Winchester Apple Blossom Festival from 1958 until 2008, and led many parades as the Town Crier. He also participated for many years as the Town Crier for First Night Winchester. Adding to his versatility, he created the character of Wayzee the Clown, appearing widely at events, birthday parties and the Waynesboro YMCA. He was also a lover of libraries and a voracious reader.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Doris Mae Nester; four children: Reed (Karen) Nester of Williamsburg, VA; Todd Nester of Brooklyn, NY; Timothy Nester of Amarillo, TX; and Kathleen (Robert) Bolton of Gap, PA; three grandchildren: Matthew Nester, Michael Nester and Jonathan Bolton; three great grandchildren: Rhiannon Nester, Lilias Nester and William Nester. He was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley McDonald.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, April 14, 2016 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. James Hughes will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A reception will follow the service.
