Russell H. Johnson, 89, formerly of Chambersburg, PA, died Tuesday evening, June 3, 2014 at Nature Park Commons, Greensburg, PA. Born October 16, 1924 in McKeesport, PA, he was the son of the late Gustave H. and Margaret Loeffler Johnson. Following graduation from high school in McKeesport, Russell served with the US Army 230th Signal Operations Company in the Pacific Theatre of Operations during WWII. He retired from U.S. Steel Corporation. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW in Chambersburg. His wife, Nancy Morrison Johnson, whom he married August 19, 1950, preceded him in death on March 20, 1997.
He is survived by his daughter, Peggy Karap and husband Richard of Peoria, AZ; his son, Tim Johnson and wife Karen of White Oak, PA; five grandchildren; and two sisters, Audrey Riemenschneider of White Oak, PA and Laverne Nickolls of West Newton, PA.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM Monday, June 9, 2014 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA with Rev. Dan McClintock officiating. Interment with military honors by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will follow at Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 PM and 7:00 – 9:00 PM Sunday and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home.
