Russell Semeraro

Russell J. Semeraro, M.D, Ph.D.
Dr. Russell Semeraro passed away unexpectedly at the Chambersburg Hospital on Sept. 5, 2012, at age 76. He was born in Utica, NY on March 2, 1936, the son of the late John and Rose Semeraro of Utica, NY.
He is survived by his wife, the “love of his life” of over 50 years, Janet Shutter Semeraro of Hershey, PA.
He leaves four children: Michael Semeraro and wife Karen of Utica, NY;
Robin Godfrey and husband Alan of Thomasville, PA; Jane Rose Love and husband Jeffrey of Potomac, MD; and Beth Allen of Utica, NY.
Six Grandchildren: Janet Anderson, Vanessa Wildasin, Regina Godfrey,
Brian Russell Love, Eric Love, and Nicholas Allen;
Nine Great Grandchildren, his loving brother and best friend, Richard Semeraro and wife Catherine, of New Hartford, NY, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Russell was a loving husband, father and grandfather whose life revolved around his family.
Dr. Semeraro is a graduate of UFA high school in Utica, NY, the NY State University College of Environmental School of Science and Forestry, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Paper Science Engineering. He worked as a Research Chemist for four years. He then attended the University of Missouri where he received a Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry and his M.D. degree. Dr. Semeraro served his internship at Rochester General Hospital in Rochester, NY and completed his Ophthalmology residency at the University of Rochester, Strong Memorial Hospital. He was in private practice in Ophthalmology in Utica, NY where he was a Board Certified Diplomat of the American Academy of Ophthalmology until his retirement in 1995. Dr. Semeraro performed the first successful corneal transplant in Oneida County in 1977. He was highly respected and loved by his patients.

He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hiking, camping, golfing and bowling. His retirement was spent with his wife in Potomac, MD, Ft. Myers, FL and Fayetteville, PA.
With respect to his wishes, there will be no memorial service. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, P.O. Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202.
