Ruth Brown

May 22, 1916 — March 31, 2017

Ruth Elizabeth Brown, age 100, of Shippensburg, PA, and formerly of Orrstown, PA, went home to be with her Savior on March 31, 2017, at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born May 22, 1916, in Nyesville, PA, she was the daughter of the late Eber and Grace Hammond Wenger.
She attended school in Letterkenny Township. Mrs. Brown worked at the former Stanley Company, retiring in 1978. She enjoyed crocheting and made many afghans over her lifetime for family members and friends. Ruth was a member of Orrstown United Brethren Church, but for the past few years she attended the Mt. Vernon Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Shippensburg. She and her husband, Friese Brown were married on March 25, 1938; together they enjoyed 64 years of marriage, until his passing on May 15, 2002. Ruth and her husband made their first home on what is now the Letterkenny Army Depot. Prior to her passing, Ruth was informed that she was the last surviving landowner of what is now Letterkenny Army Depot.
Surviving is her daughter, Faye Coldsmith (husband Clifford) of Shippensburg, PA and with whom Ruth has resided for the past 15 years; three grandchildren, Shawn Coldsmith (wife Lora) of Chambersburg, PA, Michelle Johnson (husband David) of San Jose, CA, and Shannon Weaver (husband Daniel) of Greencastle, PA; nine great-grandchildren, Joshua and Andrew Coldsmith, Grace, Luke, and Anna Johnson, and Elika, Samuel, Micah, and Sarah Weaver; and a sister, Emma Atherton of Orrstown, PA. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Orville, Eber Roy, and John Wenger; four sisters, Mildred Burkholder, Edith “Dolly” Shoop, Helen McClure, and Hazel Irene Grosh.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, April 5, 2017, at 10 AM in Pleasant Hall Cemetery, Pleasant Hall, PA, where Pastor Reuben Coldsmith will officiate. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, from 6 – 8 PM at the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA. If desired, memorial contributions may be made in Ruth’s name to the Orrstown United Brethren Church, 3689 Orrstown Rd., Orrstown, PA 17244.
