Ruth Claudy

Ruth W. Claudy, 82, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away Monday, January 20, 2014 at Providence Place following a brief illness. Born December 9, 1931 in Chambersburg, she was a daughter of the late Charles “Roy” Sr. and Margaret Stewart Bowers. A 1950 graduate of the Chambersburg High School, she retired from Sears in Chambersburg where she had worked as a Sales Associate. She was a member of the Chambersburg Baptist Church where she served as hostess for 18 years and in her free time she was active at the Chambersburg Fitness Center.

Ruth was a 29 year cancer survivor, who volunteered her time with the Reach for Recovery program, encouraging other breast cancer patients on their road to recovery. Annually, she would participate in the American Cancer Society’s Daffodil sale. In the 1990’s she was featured on billboards and as a calendar girl in a state awareness initiative to promote the fight against cancer. Her husband, Donald W. Claudy, preceded her in death on November 19, 1998.

She is survived by her daughter, Vickie (Mrs. Ron) Reed of Birmingham, AL; her son, Michael Claudy of Belfonte, PA; a special niece whom she thought of as a daughter, Sally Strock Grant of Chambersburg, PA; three grandchildren, Rhonda (Mrs. Phillip) Wilson of Birmingham, AL and their children Matthew and Caroline; Joshua Claudy of Chambersburg; and Jacob Hawkesworth of Chambersburg; and nieces and nephews Judy, Sally, Donnie, Jackie, their spouses and children. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles “Hotty” Bowers and Jack Bowers; and two sisters, Margaret “Peg” Strock and Jean Kauffman.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM Saturday, January 25, 2014 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA with Rev. Dr. Kenny Craig and Rev. Ron Reed officiating. Interment will follow at Norland Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
