Ruth Deibert McHenry, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2018 in Chambersburg. She was born on June 5, 1920 in Berwick, PA, to the late Rev. Arthur S. and Elsie (Sell) Deibert. She was predeceased by her sister Katherine L. Wyatt and an infant great-grandson. Married on August 22, 1942, Ruth was the beloved and devoted wife for 47 years of Dr. Donnel M. McHenry who passed away on May 13, 1990.
Ruth was a 1938 graduate of Northampton High School in Northampton, PA and a 1942 graduate of Temple University with a Bachelor of Science degree in education. At Temple she was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority. Before moving to Chambersburg in 1946, she worked as a dietician for the State Hospital in Harrisburg and taught home economics at the Woods School in Langhorne, PA. A member of the First Lutheran Church since 1946, Ruth was active in her earlier years serving on the church council and on the alter guild and teaching Sunday school. From 1968 through 1974 she served as a board member of the Children’s Aid Society. She was also a member of the Chambersburg Library Afternoon Club.
The endless memories she created as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend will sustain us for the rest of our lives. Surviving are her son Donnel M. McHenry, Jr. and his wife Linda (Burke) of Chambersburg, and her daughter Janet McHenry Weir, wife of Matthew A. Weir of Hershey, six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
Following a private family burial, a memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at 12:00 PM at First Lutheran Church, 43 West Washington Street, Chambersburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to her church.
