Ruth I. Hoover Metz, 97, of Chambersburg, passed away Monday, December 18, 2023 at Chambers Pointe Health Care Center. Born June 6, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Bertha S. and Charles R. Hoover, and the wife of the late Donald S. Metz.
Ruth graduated with the class of 1944 from Chambersburg High School and also graduated from the Thompson Institute in York. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church for approximately 70 years. As such, Ruth volunteered as a Sunday School teacher, church nursery attendant, Superintendent of the Sunday School, teacher of Vacation Bible School, egg maker for the annual Easter Egg fundraiser, as well as other activities at the church. She was a volunteer with the Red Cross Blood Mobile, Meals on Wheels, and the Treasure Chest thrift store at Menno Haven. Prior to having children, Ruth was a Dental Assistant for Dr. Donnel McHenry, Sr. Ruth enjoyed being with her family and traveling. She was the last of her immediate family.
She is survived by her children, Betsy Metz, David Metz (wife Carol), and James Metz (wife Stephanie); and grandchildren, Maranda Metz, Amanda Hoover, and Nicholas Metz (wife Megan); great-grandchildren Brenton, Jonas, Amethyst, and Zoe; and great-grand dog Tuck. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and husband; two sisters, Grace H. White and Louisa Slaybaugh; and two brothers, Richard C. Hoover and Charles W. Hoover.
A service to celebrate Ruth’s life will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, January 6, 2024 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 750 Norland Ave. Chambersburg, PA 17201. Rev. John H. Kratz will officiate. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.
