Ruth Ortman

July 26, 1915 — April 6, 2012

Ruth H. Ortman, age 96, of Chambersburg, PA and formerly of York, PA, passed away at the Village of Laurel Run Nursing Home, Fayetteville, PA on Friday, April 6, 2012. Born July 26, 1915 in York, PA, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Goldie Starner Herman. She married the late Paul V. Ortman, March 11, 1933 and moved to Washington Boro. In 1972 she moved to York where she resided prior to becoming a resident of the Village of Laurel Run.

She was employed by Lucas and Little Prince garment factories and Wilton Armetale, Inc. all of Columbia. She retired and became a flea market vendor until the age of 86. She earned her GED in 1975 at the age of 60 and received a diploma from York High School where she attended until her junior year.

She was a life long member of the Washington Boro Church of God where she taught Sunday School class. She was also a trained volunteer on the local ambulance crew. She was active in Autumn Action, Camp Joy El. She loved to travel with them and toured the United States, Europe and the Holy Land. She spent her eighty-second birthday on a mission trip to Costa Rica in 1997. She was known for her crocheting and many young couples were gifted with an afghan when their first child arrived.


Surviving are her children, Denton P. Ortman (wife Anna) of York, PA and Terry L. Ortman (wife Doris) of Chambersburg, PA; two grandchildren, Whitney Kate Ortman-Link (husband Greg) of York, PA and Tyler Paul Ortman of San Francisco, CA; sister, Carolyn McDonald of Columbia, PA; and niece Carol Lynn of Wrightsville, PA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul V. Ortman in 1968 and ten siblings, Kenneth, Russell, Elizabeth, Gilbert, Jean, Jacqueline, Delmar, Dale, Roger, and Daison.



Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at 11:00 AM in the Washington Boro Church of God, 15 Rockfish St., Washington Boro, PA; where Rev. Dr. Ron Susek will officiate. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 in the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM and on Wednesday at the above church from 9:30 until 11:00 AM. Interment will follow the service in the Church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in her name to the Mission Society at the above church and address or to the Heifer Fund International, P.O. Box 8058, Little Rock, AR 72203.
