Ruth E. “Snooks” Zelonis, age 79, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away on Monday, July 17, 2017, at Falling Spring Nursing and Rehab Center. Born January 9, 1938, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Luther E. and Florecne E. McKee Ewan.
Mrs. Zelonis was a 1955 graduate of the Chambersburg Area Senior High School, where she helped to move the High School from Central to its current location. Mrs. Zeloinis continued her education at Huntington College in Indiana earning her Bachelor degree in 1969 and her Master’s from Temple in 1976. She worked as a teacher for 25 years at Reynolds Junior High School, retiring in 1994. Prior to teaching she worked as a secretary at the former Williams Air Force Base in AZ for 3 years. She was a member of King Street Church, the Primetimers at King Street, and New Life Sunday School. She was a volunteer at Rhodes Grove for 10 years. Mrs. Zelonis enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, traveling, knitting, and doting on her six nephews.
Surviving are her siblings, Diane Hostetter (husband Clair) of Chambersburg and Jim Ewan (wife Linda) of Chambersburg; six nephews, Michael Baker (wife Cindi) of TX, Troy Hostetter (wife Jeannine) of Chambersburg, Todd Hostetter (wife Wendy) of MI, Trent Hostetter (wife Michele) of GA, Kevin Ewan of TX, and Keith Ewan (wife Stacey) of Chambersburg; and 11 great-nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Zelonis in 1990 and two siblings Barbara Baker and Donald Ewan.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 24, 2017, at 11 AM in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA, where Rev. Paul B. Baker and Rev. Ron Cook will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Interment will be in Conestoga Memorial Gardens at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to Rhodes Grove Camp, 7693 Browns Mill Rd, Chambersburg, PA 17202.
