Samuel Eli Butz, 83, resident of Chambersburg, passed away on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at Menno Haven - Chambers Pointe. Born on June 23, 1938 in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Stanley A. Butz and Grayce Leacock Butz, and stepson of the late Betty Jean “BJ” Butz.
A 1956 graduate of Chambersburg Area Senior High School, Sam went on to attend and play basketball for Lebanon Valley College, graduating with his Bachelor of Science degree in 1960. He soon returned to the family business, the former Modern Home Appliance Company in downtown Chambersburg, where he continued as a partner for many, many years.
Sam was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring in Chambersburg, as well as a lifelong member of the Chambersburg Club, where he often enjoyed joining friends for lunch. Anyone who knew Sam also knew that outside of his family and the business, his lifelong passion was the game of golf. The game has deep roots in the Butz family, as Sam followed in his father’s footsteps, winning multiple Club titles at the Chambersburg Country Club. Sam could still be found out on those fairways, playing with friends well into his 80’s.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Edwards Butz; children Brian (Pam) Butz, Douglas (Tammy) Butz, all of Chambersburg, Mary Beth “Missy” (Keith) Hammond of Concord, and Jennifer (Samuel) Hopple of Chambersburg; sister, Cathy (George) LaJoe of Stone Mountain, GA, Michael (Leslie) Butz of Bethlehem, PA and Joseph (Kimberly) Butz of Deerfield, MA, 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, July 15, in the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 16, in the Presbyterian Church of the Falling Spring 221 N. Main St. Chambersburg, PA 17201. The Rev. Dr. Andy R. Hart will officiate. A private family interment will precede the service in Norland Cemetery.
