Sarah M. (Kessinger) Weir, 81, died on Monday, September 16, 2013, at Providence Place in Chambersburg.Born November 9, 1931, in Markes, PA, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd Kessinger and Rosa Blanche Atherton Kessinger.
Her father died when she was an infant, and her mother and beloved stepfather, Fairman F. Lytle, raised Sarah and her sisters on a farm in Upton. She graduated as valedictorian from Lemasters High School in 1949. She married Archie E. Weir of Worcester, MA, on December 23, 1950. After a short residency in Atlantic City, NJ, the couple moved to Chambersburg, where they raised a family and celebrated 52 years of marriage before Archie’s death in 2002. Sarah retired from the A & P Supermarket after more than 20 years of employment and resided at 468 Ohio Avenue, until she moved to Providence Place in 2011. She enjoyed her family, gardening, baking, quilting, and caring for others. She was very fond of animals, especially dogs. All who knew her recall Sarah’s generosity and hospitality. Her home was often a noisy haven for children, grandchildren, friends, neighbors, and assorted dogs.
She is survived by three sons, Robert E. (husband of Emily) of Northampton, MA, Randy (husband of Kim) of Clearfield, PA, and Jeffrey L. (husband of Kimberly) of Chambersburg; three granddaughters, Lacey Weir of Hickory, NC, Shayna Weir of Avondale, AZ, and Janelle Weir of Dillsburg, PA; a grandson, Ryan Weir of Durham, NC; and two sisters, Lucile Sleighter of Greenvillage, and Evelyn Kessinger of Chambersburg.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 10 AM in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA; where Rev. Paul B. Baker will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Inurnment will follow the service in Parklawns Memorial Gardens.
