Seth Byers Shafer, 88, of Chambersburg, passed away on Wednesday morning, July 27, 2016, at Menno Haven. Born January 3, 1928, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Jacob W. and Emma Jane Byers Shafer.
Seth was a 1945 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School. After his graduation, Seth worked as a machinist helper at Shartles Machine Shop in Chambersburg. A U.S. Army veteran, Seth served honorably during the WWII era. He was then employed as a machinist and later a branch chief at Letterkenny Army Depot until his retirement. Seth was of the protestant faith. He enjoyed gardening, hunting and boating. A skilled craftsman, Seth built many things including his own boat. He earned his associates degree in Arts and Sciences from Penn State Mont Alto in 1974. Seth was a family man and loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ruth Baker Shafer, whom he married on August 20, 1949; two daughters, Kay Luckenbill and husband Gary of Elizabethtown, and Carol Burkholder and husband Dean of Shippensburg; four grandchildren, Amy Fuddy and husband Matthew of Elizabethtown, Erica Roberts and husband Matthew of Middletown, Carrie Stem and husband Maxwell of Royal Oak, MI, and Graham Burkholder and wife Nicole of Indianapolis, IN; five great-grandchildren, Magnolia, Cole, Lily, Elon, and Blake; and his sister, Mary Jane Thrush and husband Samuel of Shippensburg.
A memorial service to honor Seth’s life will be held on Friday, August 5, 2016, at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Darlene Stouffer will officiate. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 169 Lincoln Way West, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
