Shirley M. Brookens, 85, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away on Friday, April 1, 2016 at the Shook Home. Born June 22, 1930 in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late John Harold "Hal" Moyer and E. "Claire" Brown Moyer. Her beloved husband, Ray F. Brookens, whom she married on July 22, 1950, preceded her in death on September 7, 2010.
A graduate of the former Chambersburg High School, Shirley was employed as a clerk for Rocket Cleaners and Ideal Cleaners until her retirement in 1996. She served as a volunteer at Chambersburg Hospital for many years and also for the Franklin County Democratic Party where she helped work the polls. She enjoyed traveling with the Go Club, spending time with friends, helping people and reading.
She is survived by two children, Steven R. Brookens and wife Patricia, and Sharon K. Holoviak and husband Stephen, both of Chambersburg; four grandchildren, Stephen P. Holoviak and wife Linda of State College, PA, Kelly R. Holoviak of Funkstown, MD, Brooke M. Holoviak of Chambersburg, and Justin S. Holoviak and wife Renee of Chambersburg; four great-grandchildren, Stephen W. Holoviak, Cassie Hanagan, Patrick Holoviak, and James Hanagan. In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley is preceded in death by her brother, William Moyer.
A memorial service will be held in her honor at 3:00 PM on Thursday, April 14, 2016 in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202. Rev. Carenda Baker will officiate. Inurnment will follow the service in Lincoln Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
