Shirley L. (McNew) Grove, 80, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away peacefully Thursday morning, December 17, 2015 at Providence Place where she has resided the past four years. Born January 30, 1935 in Fayetteville, PA, she was a daughter and the baby of six children born to the late David C. and Rhoda (Peters) McNew. Shirley grew up and lived in the Fayetteville/Chambersburg area all of her life. Her beloved husband, Lee E. Grove, whom she married March 21, 1975, preceded her in death on September 24, 2004. She was a 1952 graduate of the Chambersburg High School and was employed by the former J.J. Hennessy Company for many years before her retirement in 1976. She was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Chambersburg and the local AARP.
She and her husband, Lee, loved traveling and going on the AARP bus trips, as well as boating on the Potomac River. Shirley was an excellent golfer playing many years in the events at the Chambersburg Country Club. She loved crafts and decorating her home for all of the holidays. She loved all aspects of homemaking, especially cooking down home meals and baking cookies, cakes, and special treats around this time of year. She also enjoyed getting her brothers and nephews “geared-up” for their annual hunting trips. Shirley was greatly loved by all those around her, including her daughter, extended family, neighbors, and friends, as well as her fellow residents and staff at Providence Place.
She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Pheil of Monroe, NJ; her sister, Pauline (wife of the late Charles) Wagner of Chambersburg; three sisters-in-laws, Julia (wife of the late Delbert) McNew of Fayetteville, Jenny (wife of the late Robert) McNew of Chambersburg, and Dot (wife of the late George) McNew of Chambersburg; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Lucille John (wife of Paul); and her three brothers, Delbert, Robert, and George.
Funeral services will be held at 9:30 AM Monday, December 21, 2015 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Jane Nicholson will officiate. Interment will follow at Lincoln Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Sunday and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home.
