Shirley S. Rife, Chambersburg, died on May 15, 2013. Born March 12, 1926 in Reading, PA. , she was the daughter of Harry and Edith (Coleman) Sonon.
A graduate of Kutztown University, she had been employed by the Chambersburg Area School District for over 30 years as a Librarian, retiring in 1988. Her love for books and reading continued as she volunteered at Coyle Free Library for over 20 years following her retirement.
Shirley was a member of Central Presbyterian Church where she served as a librarian, historian, Sunday school teacher, and vacation Bible School teacher. She was also a member of the Pennsylvania Retired Teachers’ Association and the Falling Spring Nursing Home Auxiliary. Her hobbies included needlework, gardening, and attending her grandchildren’s’ sporting events.
Surviving are a daughter Marcia Whitmore (wife of James), a son Bruce Rife (husband of Angela) 3 grandchildren Jessica Whitmore, Jeremy Whitmore, and Drew Rife, a sister Claire Palka of Wyndmoor, PA. , and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Sonon of Reading, PA.
Services will be in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA on Monday, May 20, 2013 at 1:00pm, where Rev. Scott Bowerman will officiate. Visitation will be from 11:30am – 1:00pm prior to the service. Burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Sinking Spring, PA. , at the convenience of the family.
Mrs. Rife requested no flowers at her service.
