Theodore C. “Ted” Heefner, Jr., age 84, of Chambersburg, PA passed away on August 5, 2015 at Falling Spring Nursing Home, Chambersburg, PA. Born in Chambersburg on May 31, 1931, he was the son of the late Theodore C. “Shorty” Heefner, Sr. and Lillian Kline Heefner.
A graduate of the former Chambersburg High School in 1949, Ted was a gifted athlete, earning a gold football and track shoe his senior year. He was a co-captain of the track team in 1949 and a member of the South Penn Conference Champion Football team in 1948 and 1949. Ted held the 880 yard run record at Chambersburg High School from 1949-1964, it was tied in 1953. A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Heefner served honorably for 24 years, both active and reserve, retiring in 1975 as a first sergeant. Mr. Heefner was a graduate of the former Shippensburg State Teachers College in 1956, where he had lettered in track and was a member of 1953 football team. Mr. Heefner was a teacher for 20 years, in the Quincy merged school district from 1956-1962 and in the Chambersburg Area School district from 1962-1976, where he was the Senior class advisor for the class of 1970. Mr. Heefner was a YMCA Judo Club Advisor from 1967-1983, he started Judo at the age of 37 and continued until he was 53, he earned a 2nd degree black belt from the U.S. Judo Association in 1978. Mr. Heefner was a life member of the U.S. Judo Association, VFW Post 1599, AMVETS Post 224, American Legion Post 46, and the 45th Infantry (Thunderbird) Division Association of Oklahoma City, OK. He was also a member of the VFW Post 1599 honor guard.
Surviving are four children, Reginald L. and Tim R. Heefner both of Chambersburg and Deborah Heefner of New Mexico, and Toshia Heefner of Harrisburg, PA; five grandchildren, Jennifer Albright (Alfred), Austin, Brandon, and Caitlynn Foor, and Elijah N. Miller; two great grandchildren, MacKenzie Frey and Abigail Albright; and three siblings, Ronald Heefner, Richard Kriner, and John Kriner, and his step-mother, Anna Heefner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael T. Heefner, a brother, Harold Kriner, and his former wife, Doris E. “Dee” Byers Heefner.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at 1 PM in the Chapel of Thomas L Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Interment will follow the service in Lincoln Cemetery, with military honors provided by members of the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 honor guard.
