Theodore E. “Ted” Hughes, Jr., 75, of Chambersburg, passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at Mercy House. Born July 3, 1948 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Theodore E. Hughes, Sr. and Carrie Ellen Fisher Hughes.
Ted was a 1966 graduate of CASHS. A US Army veteran, Ted served honorably in Vietnam and later at Arlington National Cemetery. He was employed as PTSD Coordinator at the VA Hospital in Martinsburg, WV. Ted was a member of the American Legion Post 46 and VFW Post 1599 in Chambersburg. An avid sports fan, he closely followed the New York Jets, Philadelphia Phillies and the Martinsburg High School Bulldogs.
He is survived by his companion of 17 years, Wilma Papalia of Chambersburg; two children, Theodore E. Hughes III of Chambersburg, and Brittany Hughes of Martinsburg, WV; one granddaughter, Alia Hughes of Chambersburg; one sister, Carolyn Washabaugh (John) of Fayetteville; two step-children, Trevor O’Quinn (Crystal) of East Berlin, and Kandis Shoaf (Nathan) of Ft. Meade, MD; five step-grandchildren, Leana O’Quinn, Kayden O’Quinn, Faith Shoaf, Hope Shoaf, and Patience Shoaf; and numerous close friends. In addition to his parents, Ted was preceded in death by his faithful K-9 companion, Walley, who he spoiled constantly.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, January 11, 2024 in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202. Fr. T. Mathew Rowgh will officiate. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Salem Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard.
