Thomas P. Chigas, 82, of Fayetteville, PA, passed away Friday evening, October 30, 2015 at his home. Born March 17, 1933 in Hastings, PA, he was a son of the late George, Sr. and Helen Forberger Chigas. Mr. Chigas was a graduate of the Hastings High School and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was employed for thirty-two years with IBM in Washington, DC, retiring from the company’s Rockville Federal Systems Division in 1988. He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #1426, and Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, all in Chambersburg. Mr. Chigas was also a member of the Penn National Harmony Singers. He enjoyed watching sports, especially the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Pittsburgh Steelers, and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed deer hunting, and yardwork.
He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Wilma Schmidt Chigas, whom he married July 30, 1955; his daughter, Michele C. Hillman and husband Thomas of Westminster, MD; and his grandchildren, Cassandra and Joshua Hillman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, George Chigas, Jr. and a sister, Ruth Legdon.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM Wednesday, November 4, 2015 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. The Very Rev. Luis Rodriguez will officiate. Entombment with military honors by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will follow at Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 10:30-11:30AM Wednesday at the funeral home.
