Vaughn H. N. Carmack, age 92, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away on Saturday morning, June 13, 2015 at Elmcroft of Shippensburg. Born September 6, 1922 in Three Springs, PA, he was a son of Harvey N. and Naomi Stevens Carmack. His beloved wife, Pearl L. Carmack, whom he married on June 21, 1952, preceded him in death on July 21, 2009.
A U.S. Army veteran, Vaughn served honorably from 1943 – 1945 during World War II in the 30th Infantry Division, 119th Regiment, Co. G. During his time in the army, Vaughn was awarded the Purple Heart Medal. After his discharge, Vaughn worked as a police officer at Letterkenny Army Depot until his retirement in 1976. He also served as a Franklin County Deputy Sheriff and was a member of the St. Thomas Volunteer Fire Co. Fire Police. Vaughn was a member of the former Salem United Methodist Church, the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599, the Detrich-Brechbill Post 612 American Legion, the NRA, and NARFE.
Vaughn is survived by two children, Rhonda Y. McDermott of Chambersburg, Shayne S. Carmack (Marci Salyards) of Marion; a grandson, Ryan S. Carmack of Huntsville, AL; and a foster daughter, Tammy Breon and husband Doug of Marion; four siblings, Merrill Carmack of Chambersburg, Annalee Sellers of Fayetteville, Wanda Morelock of Chambersburg, and Shirley Murray of St. Thomas. In addition to his parents and wife, Vaughn was preceded in death by four siblings, Reno Carmack, Juanita Shatzley, Leona Piper, and Grandon Carmack.
A funeral service to honor Vaughn’s life will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Chaplain Casey Hurst will officiate. Interment will follow the service in Lincoln Cemetery where military graveside honors will be provided by the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 8:30 – 10:00 AM Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association Franklin/Fulton Division, 1019 Mumma Rd. Wormleysburg, PA 17043.
