Verna L. Hoover, 87, of Chambersburg, passed away on Thursday, June 1, 2023 at Chambers Pointe. Born November 10, 1935 in Maddensville, PA, she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Ruie Brown Stains.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 61 years, Harold Hoover, whom she married on June 17, 1962; two sons, Steven N. Hoover and wife Yasmin of Oklahoma City, OK, and Brian K. Hoover and wife Ericka of Mechanicsburg; one granddaughter, Chloe Luft-Hoover of Mechanicsburg, and a number of nieces and nephews. Aside from her parents, Verna was preceded in death by six sisters, Cleona Roher, Zelda Shaw, Myrtle Snyder, Violet Lash, Mildred Mellott, and Alma Mellott; and four brothers, Howard, Earl, Clarence and Carl Stains.
Verna was a graduate of Saltillo Joint High School in Saltillo, PA. She was employed as a telephone operator for United Telephone Co. and later Sprint until 1991. She then worked at Wilson College until her retirement in 1997. She was a member of King Street United Brethren Church in Chambersburg. Verna enjoyed traveling, crocheting, making and painting ceramics and spending time with her family.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, June 7, 2023 in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202. Rev. Ronald Cook will officiate. Interment will follow the service in Norland Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Wednesday, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, 5051 Letterkenny Road West, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
