Vernon Weller

April 11, 1925 — February 9, 2019

SGT. MAJOR Vernon Paul “Bucky” Weller, Jr., age 93, formerly of 1818 Scotland Avenue, Chambersburg, PA, peacefully departed this life on February 9, 2019 in the Martinsburg VA Medical Center. He was born April 11, 1925 in Chambersburg, to Vernon Paul and Mary (McDonald) Weller. Bucky was preceded in death by his loving wife Pauline (Welker) Weller; one brother Dick; and one sister Martha.

Bucky was an Army Veteran of World War II and participated, endured & survived the greatest land battle ever fought and won by the United States Army, The Battle of the Bulge. During World War II, SGT. Vernon "Bucky" Weller was captured by the Germans and was later liberated from the POW camp Stalag VII- A in Moosburg, Germany. He served as a First Sergeant with the US Army for 30 years and as a First Sergeant with the Pennsylvania National Guard Military Academy for 22 years.

In civilian life, Bucky was employed by the former Fairchild Aircraft Corporation in Hagerstown, MD and Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 1599, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 842, American Legion Post 46, and the Amvets Post 224, all in Chambersburg. He loved sports and was an avid fan of the Cincinnati Reds and Cincinnati Bengals. His hobbies included collecting baseball cards and sports memorabilia. He was active with Chambersburg Little League, serving as Vice President for 4 years. He also played an active role in local youth football for 49 years, serving as President for 12 years. He chaired many reunions of both the great 728th Ordinance Company and the 28th Division.

Bucky will be lovingly remembered by his two sons, Terry (and wife, Lois) Weller of Chambersburg, PA and Tommy (and wife Veronica) Weller of Tarpon Springs, FL., three grandsons, Cameron (and wife Channelle), Emory (and wife Jennifer), and Joshua Stickell, all of Chambersburg, PA; as well as three great grandchildren, Terell, Grant and Natalie.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, February 14, 2019, in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. The family will receive friends from 9:00-10:00 AM Thursday at the funeral home. Interment with military honors conducted by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will be at Parklawns Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the "Community Living Center", Martinsburg VA Medical Center, 510 Butler Avenue, Martinsburg, WV, 25405.
