Veronica Teresa “Ronnie” Shatzer, 90, of Penn Hall Nursing Center, formerly of 614 Guilford Ave., died on Friday, January 20, at Penn Hall Nursing Home.
Born July 29, 1921, in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Frank Hempsey and the late Anna Gorman Hempsey.
Mrs. Shatzer retired as a clerk-typist from Letterkenny Army Depot in 1981. She previously worked as a secretary at the Frankford Arsenal, Philadelphia; U.S. Department of Labor, Chambersburg; and Penn Hall Preparatory School, Chambersburg. She had been an active member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, particularly in its Council of Catholic Women and Legion of Mary. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, American Association of Retired Persons and Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
She graduated from John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School in Philadelphia, where she lived until 1946 when she married Jack E. Shatzer and moved to Chambersburg. Her husband died on Sept. 3, 1988. She is survived by one daughter and three sons: Dolores “Lorrie” DeFrank, Jacksonville, Fla.; Gerard (Diana) Shatzer, Collegeville; Joseph (Susan) Shatzer, Shippensburg; and Christopher (Barbara) Shatzer, Chambersburg; five grandchildren: Timothy and Thomas Brown, and Benjamin, Courtney and David Shatzer; and three great-grandchildren: Allysa, Parker and Jonas Brown. A brother, Joseph Hempsey, preceded her in death.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg, PA. Interment will follow in Corpus Christi Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA.
