Virginia Overcash

Virginia Manning Overcash, 90, resident of Menno Haven Village Square and Penn Hall Nursing Center, and formerly of Byers Avenue, passed away on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 in the Chambersburg Hospital. Born on January 2,1921 in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Robert Culp Manning and Norine Diffenderfer Manning. She was the widow of Charles Jay Overcash, who preceded her in death on August 26, 1996. She is survived by her son, Dr. Stephen Jay Overcash (wife: Elise) and daughter, Jill Overcash Witter (husband: Lawrence), all of Chambersburg; 5 grandchildren: TSgt Matthew Harris (wife: Alicia) Mountain Home, Idaho, Cmdr. David Overcash (wife: Elizabeth) Portsmouth, Rhode Island, Mark Harris (wife: Cheryl) Noblesville, IN, Michael Overcash Chambersburg, & Megan Harris York PA; by 6 great grandchildren: Adan Overcash, Everett Overcash, Alexandra Overcash, Abigail Harris, Ella Harris, & Izabell Harris. She is survived by her sisters-in-law: Mardelle Overcash, Chambersburg and Delores Deardorff, Fayetteville. Aside from her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Robert C. Manning Jr.,
A 1938 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School, she was a singer for the Rhythm Kids, a Dance Orchestra directed by Mr. Phil Young. She was also well known as a dancer, dancing the "Sugar Foot" with her husband, Jay, into her 70's. In addition to raising two children, she was a telephone operator and a "Greeter" to new families moving into the Chambersburg area. Her nickname, OOoo, was used by her children, grandchildren and many friends It came from her style of opening the door to the home of sleeping grandchildren and quietly calling "OOoo" rather than ring the doorbell and awaken them . She fell in love with Stone Harbor, NJ and enjoyed spending time in her summer home with her family and friends. She loved playing golf, both with the women's 18-holers at the Chambersburg Country Club and with her husband, Jay, in their later years in Senior Golf Events. During her last year, she was affectionately known in Menno Village as the "Guardian of the Lobby." Virginia was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church.
A Memorial Service will be held at 12 PM on Saturday, March 5, 2011 in the chapel of the First United Methodist Church, 225 S. Second Street, Chambersburg, with Rev. Donald Nolder officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the Memorial Service. A reception will immediately follow the service in the church's Fellowship Hall. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to: The Capitol Theatre or The Elaine Shepard Scholarship at Menno Haven. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Chambersburg.
