Virginia “Ruth” Whitsel, age 79, of Chambersburg, PA passed away at her home on Friday, September 7, 2012. Born in Three Springs, PA on December 28, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Cecil and Clair Hammond Cohenour.
Ruth was a 1950 graduate of the former Orbisonia High School. She established, owned and operated “The Nutrition Center, Inc.” on North Franklin St. in Chambersburg, for 15 years, retiring in 1995. She was a member of the Brethren Fellowship Church and the Martha Custis Chapter No. 342, Order of the Eastern Star. She was an accomplished seamstress and herbalist. Ruth enjoyed collecting fiestaware, but spending time with her family brought her the most joy, especially her grandchildren.
Surviving is her husband of 62 years, Hays B. Whitsel, whom she married on June 16, 1950; her children, Bradford Whitsel (wife Tappey) of Chambersburg, PA, Timothy Whitsel (wife Cheryl) of Fedora, SD, and Brian Whitsel of Chambersburg, PA; her grandchildren, Ryan Hays Whitsel (wife Peggy) of Orlando, FL, Amanda Whitsel Ingram (husband Benjamin) of Reston, VA, and Madeline Lee Whitsel of Chambersburg, PA, one great granddaughter, Ava Ruth Ingram, and five siblings, Carl Cohenour of Three Springs, PA, Glenn Cohenour of Orbisonia, PA, Pauline Thomas of Mapleton Depot, PA, Betty Booher of Shirleysburg, PA, and Thelma Wilson of Spring Run, PA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Lorna Brumbaugh and Emma Jean Cohenour and one brother, Kenneth Cohenour.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at 11:00 AM in the Brethren Fellowship Church, 339 Lincoln Way East, Chambersburg, PA 17201; where Rev. Manny Diaz will officiate. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 11, 2012 from 7:00 until 9:00 PM in the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be in Monroe Valley Cemetery, Cromwell Township, PA at 4:00 PM on Wednesday.
