Walter Herbert Engle, 75, passed away on Wednesday, October 31, 2018, at home. Walter was born August 7, 1943, at Goldsboro, NC, and was the son of the late Isaiah H. Engle and Pearl Gosser Engle. He was married to Shirlene Engle on July 16, 1988, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Gaithersburg, MD.
Walter worked for the old Defense Mapping Agency, DOD, currently the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Potomac, MD, as a cartographer. He spent his entire career with the agency beginning work there out of high school. He retired after 37 years of service. After retiring, he became a member of the Inn Flying Club, Gaithersburg, MD, and learned to fly; he was cleared to fly the Club’s Cessna 152, 172, and 182 planes. He loved flying and also took instructions in aerobatic flying, being told by his instructor that he had an iron stomach. Walter was a member of Pentalpha Lodge No. 194, A.F. and A.M., Germantown, MD, and Almas Shriners, Washington, DC. His membership at Almas Shrine provided many good memories of social activities as well as being a driver transporting local children in need of care to the Shriner’s Orthopedic Hospital in Philadelphia. He had more than 150 trips to Philadelphia in the short time in which he was an active Shriner. His interests also included model railroading, photography, and astronomy. He was Treasurer at Good Shepherd Lutheran for many years as well as participating as a teller. He was an active usher until he could no longer manage getting to church on Sunday mornings. For many years, he participated in delivering food to clients on behalf of Gaithersburg Help.
Walter is survived by Shirlene Engle, his wife of 30 years; son, Steven W. Engle and daughter-in-law Sonoe; granddaughters, Melody and Stephanie Engle; grandson, Jeromy Solenberger; step-daughter, Laura Williams Dunn and her husband Tommy; and his sister, Paula Engle. In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Engle.
