Walter O. Portmann, 94, of Chambersburg, passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2024 in the comfort of his home.
Born in Canton, Ohio, he was the son of the late William and Grace (O’Connor) Portmann.
An educator most of his career, Dr. Portmann retired as Professor Emeritus in the Mathematics Department of Wilson College. He was a graduate of Kent State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. He was also a graduate of Case Institute of Technology where he received a Master’s degree and a PhD in mathematics.
Dr. Portmann was a member of Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church. He and his wife were involved with the Young at Heart Club, St. Vincent De Paul Food Pantry and Meals on Wheels for many years.
Surviving are his three children, Thomas P. Portmann (wife Bernadette Kosek) of Chambersburg; John E. Portmann of Charlottesville, VA; Catherine M. Dusman (husband Todd) of Chambersburg; five grandchildren, Stephanie, Margaret, Thomas, Mary Claire Portmann and Rachel Dusman; and one sister, Carol Bonsky. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in the death by his loving wife, Carol J. Portmann (Duch) and two brothers, Glenn and Richard.
Walter was a gift to anyone who met him. He was a kind and generous man who was extremely passionate about donating to numerous charities that he and his wife Carol supported over the years. Walter enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and loved anything mathematical.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, where Fr. Allan Wolfe and Deacon Ramsey will celebrate his life. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the Mass in the Narthex of Corpus Christi Church. Burial will be private in Corpus Christi Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to St. Vincent De Paul Food Pantry Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave. Chambersburg, PA 17201 or Hospice of Franklin County at franklinhospice.org.
