Wesley Eugene “Gene” Cowan, 82, of Chambersburg and formerly of Fannettsburg, PA, died Friday morning, January 6, 2012 in the Chambersburg Hospital surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. Born November 15, 1929 in Mt. Union, he was a son of the late John D. and Sue Gordon Cowan. Early in life Gene was employed in building construction, after which, he was employed at Nitterhouse Concrete in Chambersburg from 1974 until his retirement in 2008. He was a member of the Spring Run United Methodist Church, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #842, the Marine Corps League, and B.P.O. Elks Lodge #600, all in Chambersburg, Clarence Armstrong Post 6241 VFW and Harry Lackhove Post 517 American Legion in Mercersburg and Wesley Yeager Post 606 American Legion in Ft. Loudon. He was an avid hunter and loved high school sports, especially baseball. Gene coached Little League for seven years and enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports.
He is survived by his loving wife, Violet Price Cowan, whom he married September 2, 1950; his son, Richard E. Cowan and wife Wendy of Chambersburg; three grandchildren, Amy L. Brown and husband Christopher, Carrie L. Cowan, and Richaela H. Cowan; three great-grandchildren, Taylor and Ian Brown, and Hannah Cowan; and his sister, Patricia C. Heckman of Chambersburg. He is also survived by six nephews, Gary Heckman, Keith, Rodney, and Larry Price, Charles Stine, Jr. and Steve Adams; three nieces Tina Faulkner, Sandra Aurand, and Trisha Schriver; as well as a number of great- nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his great-grandson, Kirkland T. Cowan; three infant brothers; and two nephews, Tracy Heckman and Ed Price.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, January 9, 2012 at Agett-Geisel Funeral Home, 18875 Main Street, Dry Run, PA. Chaplain Robert Keener and Rev. Marlin A. Neil will officiate. Interment will follow in Upper Path Valley Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00PM Sunday at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA and one hour prior to the service Monday at Agett – Geisel Funeral Home in Dry Run.
