Wilbur W. Kennedy, 93, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away Saturday evening, June 4, 2016 at Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born April 28, 1923 in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Lazarus and Sadie C. Hoover Kennedy. Wilbur was a graduate of the former Chambersburg High School and served with the US Army during WWII. He was employed for thirty-one years at Letterkenny Army Depot prior to his retirement in 1973. After retiring from Letterkenny he was employed at the former H.L. Mills gas station and as a courier for M&T Bank. He attended St. John’s United Church of Christ and was a life member and Past Commander (’81-’82 and ’82-’83) of Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW where he served on the VFW Honor Guard for 65 years. He was also a life member of DAV Post 110 and Friendship Hose Company #1; a member of AMVETS Post 223; and a former member of the Marine Corps League and American Legion Post 46, all in Chambersburg. He volunteered at Chambersburg Hospital; enjoyed reading and puzzles; and early in his life enjoyed bowling.
He is survived by his wife, Margaretta Louise Carmack Kennedy, whom he married November 8, 1946; his son Terry Lee Kennedy, Sr. and wife Diane of Blairs Mills; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Esther Riley and Margaret Worthington, both of Chambersburg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Catherine Arlene Burns on November 9, 2015; six brothers, Charles, Clarence, Frank, Harold, Seth, and William; and a sister, Anna Johnston.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM Thursday, June 9, 2016 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Mark Ruzicka will officiate. Interment with military honors by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will follow at Lincoln Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Wednesday and one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home.
