Wilbur Truett

Wilbur Russ Truett, Jr., 85, of Chambersburg, PA, died Monday afternoon, April 15, 2013 at Chambersburg Hospital. Born November 2, 1927 in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Wilbur R., Sr. and Edna R. Thompson Truett. Russ served with the US Marine Corps during WWII and retired in 1985 from Letterkenny Army Depot as Director of Quality Assurance after 41 years of service. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Chambersburg and was a life member of the Landis-McCleaf Detachment of the Marine Corps league, Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, and Deitrich-Brechbill Post 612 American Legion where he served on the Honor Guard. He was a fifty year member of George Washington Lodge #143 and held membership in the Harrisburg Consistory, the Zembo Temple, Tall Cedars of Lebanon Valley Forest #145, the Franklin County Shrine Club, and NARFE Chapter 1063. Active in fire service throughout his life, he was a Past President, former Fire Chief, and current Treasurer of the Goodwill Steam, Fire, Engine, and Hose Company #3, a retired Assistant Fire Chief for the Borough of Chambersburg, and Past President and current Trustee for the Chambersburg Fireman’s Relief Association. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, attending the sporting events of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, attending the Marion Auction, and being an active member of the Hardee’s Breakfast Bunch. He was a handyman who enjoyed tinkering with projects.

He is survived by his wife, Marion E. Kean Truett, whom he married November 19, 1949; two sons, Richard T. Truett and wife Susan and Wilbur R. “Russ” Truett, III and wife Deborah; nine grandchildren, Brian R. Truett and friend Lisa Dotson, Michelle R. Hoover and husband Ken, Richard T. Truett, Jr., Wilbur R. “Rusty” Truett IV and wife Janelle, Michael A. Truett and wife Cate, Tracy Roman and husband John, Trish Stewart and husband Keith, Wade Saylor and wife Kelly, and Ryan Saylor and wife Renae; fifteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by two sisters, Ruth Hain and Sarah Davenport; and two brothers, Jay Truett and wife Violet and Donald E. Truett and wife Jo. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Samuel “Turk” Truett, Ray E. Truett, Anderson F. Truett, and Larry Truett; and two sisters, Dorothy Shives and Martha Tarner.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, April 19, 2013 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA with Rev. Dick Williams officiating. Interment with military honors by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will follow at Lincoln Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday and from 9:00-10:00 AM Friday at the funeral home. Masonic services will be conducted by members of George Washington Lodge #143 F & AM at 7:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 225 South Second Street, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
