William Hartman

January 2, 1926 — June 28, 2014

William P. Hartman, age 88, of Waterside, PA, passed away on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. Born on January 2, 1926 in Altoona, PA, he was the son of the late William P. and Sarah Ethel McCracken Hartman.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served in both WWII and the Korean Conflict as a combat veteran. Mr. Hartman retired from the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Harrisburg, PA, having previously been an Industrial Arts teacher in Everett, PA and Boiling Springs, PA. He was later employed by Grove Manufacturing Co. and Letterkenny Army Depot. He participated in various bands and orchestras in Altoona, Millersville, Shippensburg, and Chambersburg, PA. Mr. Hartman was most recently a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Woodbury and was a former member of First United Methodist Church of Chambersburg. He was a 65 year member of the F & A M, belonging to George Washington Lodge, No. 143; Chapter, Council and Commandery of Chambersburg and Harrisburg Consistory. He was a life member of VFW Post 1599, the American Legion Post 46, the Disabled American Veterans Post 78, and emeritus member of various honorary Education fraternities.

Surviving are his children, Michael B. Hartman (wife Susan) of Walnut Bottom, PA and Michele L. Reilly (husband Scott) of Whittier, CA; and one grandson, Adin W. Reilly of Whittier, CA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gail on December 5, 2011.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at 11:30 AM at the Faith United Methodist Church, 133 Main St., Woodbury, PA; where Pastor Mick Dawes will officiate. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the George Washington Lodge No. 143, Chambersburg, PA.
