William J. Summers, age 83, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2016, at home. Born May 11, 1932, in Chambersburg, PA, he was the son of the late Jacob W. and Jane Pheil Summers.
A United States Army veteran, Bill served honorably during the Korean Conflict. He was employed as an inventory manager for Associated Wholesalers for more than 20 years and as a custodian for the Chambersburg School District and Coldbrook School for more than 15 years. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed baseball and cheering on the Dallas Cowboys. Bill also enjoyed collecting memorabilia of all sorts including stamps, toys, baseball and football cards and stationery products. He loved spending time with his faithful companion, his beloved Shih Tzu, Dolly. He was a member of Grace Brethren Church in Chambersburg.
Surviving is his wife of 30 years, Barbara Rife Summers, whom he married on November 29, 1985; five sons, William E. Summers (wife Gina) of Melbourne, FL, Robert Jay Summers (wife Victoria) of Lancaster, PA, Jeffrey L. Summers (wife Luann) of Fayetteville, PA, Mark A. Summers (wife Billie Jo) of Nashville, GA and Troy J. Summers (wife Candy) of Chambersburg, PA; two step-children, Terry L. Guyer (wife Thelma) of Pendleton, IN and Dotti A. Varner (husband Tim) of Newburg, PA; 13 grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Cinda Dianne Summers Poe.
A funeral service to honor Bill’s life will be held at 1 PM on Tuesday, May 3, 2016, in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202. Pastor John Bayer, Jr. will officiate. Interment will follow the service in Norland Cemetery where members of the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard will provide military honors. The family will receive friends one-hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
