William Walter

William H. Walter, age 88, of Chambersburg, died on Monday, January 16, 2012 in Manor Care Health Services of Chambersburg. Born on September 7, 1923 in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Ernest W. and Mary (Hamsher) Walter.

Bill served his country during World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps. Retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1983, Bill previously owned and operated the former Walter’s Sunoco and Walter’s Taxi Service in Chambersburg. He and his son, J. William, also co-owned Walter Development Corporation, holders of Lincoln Way Wash & Gas and Keystone Car Washes. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Chambersburg. Bill was a real family man. His favorite times included family trips to the beach and spoiling his grandchildren and great grandchildren with secret trips for ice cream.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Gail (Cosey) Walter, whom he married on Christmas Day of 1943; two children, J. William Walter (wife, Susan) and Bonnie Ommert, all of Chambersburg, one sister, Margaret Burns of Daytona Beach, FL. He is also survived by four granddaughters, Heather, Cheryl, Jaime, and Kristy, and four great granddaughters, Abigail, Emma, Ella, and Cadence. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Winifred and Jean, and 2 brothers, Harold and Richard.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM on Friday, January 20, 2012 in the chapel of the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, with Rev. Dick Williams officiating. Interment will follow in Norland Cemetery, where members of the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard will conduct military graveside honors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 PM on Thursday, and one hour prior to the funeral on Friday.
