Winifred B. “Winnie” Agett, 94, of Fannettsburg, and formerly of Dry Run, PA, passed away Sunday morning, June 3, 2018 at her home. Born September 9, 1923 in Troxelville, PA, she was the daughter of the late Jacob H. and Nellie Ocker Bingman. Winnie attended James M. Coughlin High School in Wilkes-Barre for two years and graduated in 1942 from the Sunbury High School. She went on to attend Rider College in Trenton, NJ. Early in her life she served as a substitute elementary school teacher in Troxelville. where she taught grades 1-4. She was then employed with the US Navy in Philadelphia and at the Pentagon in Washington, DC. She went on to work at the Insurance Company of North America in Philadelphia and later as secretary at the Binkley Brothers and Ober Stone Quarry in Dry Run. She and her husband, John L. Agett, whom she married August 8, 1945, together owned and operated the Agett Funeral Home in Dry Run for fifty years. John preceded her in death on October 5, 1999.
Winnie was an active member and former Deacon of the Upper Path Valley Presbyterian Church where she sang with the choir and was a member and Past President of the Women’s Association. She was a member for more than fifty years of Martha Custis Chapter #342 Order of Easter Star; was a charter member and Past President of the Path Valley Lioness Club; was a member of Farm Women Group #8; and served as secretary of the Dry Run Water Company and Treasurer of the thrift shop in Dry Run. She enjoyed attending her high school Class of 1942 luncheons that were held each month.
She is survived by three daughters, Susan Baxter (Robert) of Carlisle, Ruth “Liz” Jones (Joseph) of Shippensburg, and Kimberly McCurdy (James) of Fannettsburg; a granddaughter, Megan Leigh Byers of Carlisle; five grandsons, Ryan J. Jones (Amy) of Elysburg, Jonathan A. Byers (Diana) of Boiling Springs, Aaron M. Jones of Shippensburg, Chase A. McCurdy (Natasha) of Spring Run, and Tanner J. McCurdy of Fannettsburg; and three great-granddaughters, Lainey Madelyn Jones, Emma Kate Jones, and Mackenzie Rose Byers. She is also survived by a niece, Karen Messner Laudenslager; and two nephews, Michael Messner and Robert Messner. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Phillip Ocker.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, June 7, 2018 at Upper Path Valley Presbyterian Church, Spring Run, PA. Rev. Dr. Meagan Boozer and Rev. Marlin Neil will officiate. Interment will follow at Upper Path Valley Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church.
